Colour Your Day

Explore the full palette of colour to energise your day, says energy healer Linda James 

 

Colour has a significant effect on us physically, emotionally and mentally. We are affected by colour on a daily basis, whether it’s in our home, at work or in the environment around us. Colours are created by different wavelengths of light, with each colour having its own wave energy or vibration. 

 

Colour as a source of energy 

Awareness of the effect of colour on us is not a ‘new age’ approach; in fact, we can relate colour therapy back to ancient times with the Romans, Egyptians and Greeks recorded as using colour as a healing modality. It is believed the ancient Egyptians also used gems and crystals in specifically built temples, often building a variety of rooms, each with its own colour. The sun shining through the crystals and colour refracted onto the sitting person, who received healing from both the colour and the crystals. 

 

The beautiful stained glass windows in the great cathedrals of Europe, built around the 12th and 13th centuries, not only told stories in the form of images, but the refracted colour from the windows were also used for healing. Again, in some cathedrals, there were small rooms of a particular colour for the parishioners to “bathe” in that colour. The parishioner chose the colour they felt they needed or was prescribed for them by the healers or doctors of the day. It was believed that those who sat and prayed in the light of those rooms healed more quickly than those who didn’t. The light and colours from the stained glass windows were also used to create an environment suitable for meditation and prayer.

 

If you have the opportunity to sit in the refracted light of a stained glass window, it would be an energising, as well as a beautiful experience, particularly if you are visiting some of the great cathedrals of Britain and Europe. Check the best time of the day to capture the sun shining through the window and refracting the light. 

 

It was Sir Isaac Newton (1642–1727) who showed us that when light is refracted through a prism, it resolves into its six component colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. These are the colours of the rainbow and of the individual chakras (plus indigo, which is acknowledged as the primary colour for the third eye or brow chakra).

 

The mood of colour

Colour has a noticeable effect on our mood. Retail outlets, supermarkets and fast-food chains want to make as much money as possible, and they know they can increase customer participation with a careful choice of colours to entice people to buy their products. On the other hand, a relaxing atmosphere is frequently created in hospital waiting rooms with the use of soft green or blue shades.

 

Colour my day 

One of the things I’ve noticed about the cubicles in workplaces is they tend to be in neutral colours, such as beige or grey - in other words, lacking in colour. Lack of energy from colour is one of the contributors to feeling low on energy or feeling tired by the end of the day.  On the other hand excessive use of one bold colour, even though it may be a chakra colour, can be overwhelming and have a negative impact.

 

Take into consideration any strong colours already around you, such as from the walls and fabrics, because you will be receiving the benefit of that colour vibration. However, it is only useful if the colours are clean, crisp and not overwhelming. Muddy or murky colours are not beneficial. If you are surrounded by a very brightly or boldly coloured cubicle (or walls) and feel it is overwhelming, you can tone down the strong vibrational energy. Add some of the more calming and soft colours, such as turquoise, which is a gentle, peaceful colour, or green, which is everywhere in nature and restful on the eyes. A soft blue is calm and relaxing. 

 

How do the colours in your workplace make you feel? Notice the colours on the walls, the colours of any work cubicles and carpets. Are the colours adding energy or are they depleting energy?

 

Energising vibration of food colours 

According to Theo Gimbel, “Colour not only fills our outside world; it penetrates deep into our bodies. Its continual influence means that the effects of light on the body are second only to the effects of food.” 

 

Dieticians tell us to put a variety of coloured foods on our plates for a balanced diet and wellbeing. An easy way to get the energy you need is by eating the colour vibration found naturally in some of your favourite foods. There’s an old saying, “A little bit of what you fancy does you good.’ The body is aware of what it needs and knows what colour is necessary to heal or to energise. The surface colour of the food relates to the energy and the colour of the individual chakra. 

 

The corporate uniform

Add the ‘corporate uniform’ to a lack of colour around you and you are a candidate for energy depletion. What’s the corporate uniform? It tends toward the dark colours, usually black, that are commonly worn in the workplace. I’m not against wearing the colour black; it goes so well with many other colours. However, as far as energy is concerned, black is a ‘non’ colour. Light is absorbed by black, but nothing is reflected back; the colour black doesn’t allow the energising vibrations of colour through to the body. 

 

It is interesting to look at some of the reasons, consciously or subconsciously, that we choose to wear black in the corporate environment. Because black does not give out a vibration, it is considered the colour of mystery; we do not necessarily know who the real person is behind the corporate black. In the workplace, by wearing black, you can hide who you are: it’s a form of protection. 

 

It is also a colour that is often chosen to hide the figure because it is thought to have a slimming effect. The colour black can also be overpowering and give the wearer the appearance of being aloof. Black is the colour of authority and power, but it also implies submission. Nuns and priests wear black to signify their submission to God.

 

Wearing black is not exclusive to the business environment. Black, as a favourite colour for formal wear, allows the wearer that sphere of social mystery. Black is considered the colour of sophistication, but it is worth remembering that one of the original meanings of the word sophistication is “pretentiously and superficially wise”. 

 

When you wear a colour, you are expressing a part of yourself through your choice of colour. But to wear black is to not express yourself. 

 

It is recommended that if you wear the ‘corporate uniform’, include some colour. I have found that by having blouses or scarves in each of the seven chakra colours, I could add the colour that I needed each day. Your body knows what it needs. It knows the colour vibration that will strengthen your chakras and the colour or colours that will provide you with the most energy. Go with your felt sense, your intuition, that gut feeling! 

 

Men can add colour through ties, jumpers, shirts or coloured underwear. Your colour choice doesn’t necessarily have to be on show to the outer world.

 

The colour white is the opposite of black and reflects colour, as demonstrated by Isaac Newton. Dressing in white clothing is a requirement, for example, when attending healing sessions with many healers.  The white clothing allows healing energy greater access to the body. 

 

Colour therapists or practitioners use a variety of techniques that have been tried and tested over many years. The kinds of colour techniques you can use yourself, to increase energy, and are easy to obtain or implement, are coloured crystals, coloured materials or silks and shapes, coloured clothes, solarised water, colourful foods, colour visualisation, colour breathing and flowers.

The Reality of your Day

There’s a perception that the boss or the company creates the working day, and there’s little we can do about it.

Many people I meet have an appreciation of a concept that we create our own reality, but do not apply it to their working day. The way you view the world creates your reality, and within that reality, you are who you choose to be and decide what to include in your day. Your reality is only true at this moment, and it is liberating and exciting to realise that tomorrow has not yet been created and is still open to unlimited possibilities. You start every day with a clean palette and paints to create your own picture — this is the reality of knowing you have ownership of your day.

Much of our physical condition may appear to be fixed or permanent, but it isn’t. Situations and our environment can and do change in an instant; some changes are welcomed, such as an unexpected promotion or a pay rise, resulting in more money and greater opportunities, but other changes, such as natural disasters that wipe out the town in moments, are not. The Law of Attraction

Our working day is a constant stream of energy ebbing and flowing all around us and within us. Energy has a magnetic pull. Our thoughts are energy pulling what we think about towards us. Thoughts manifest into reality; thoughts become material. It’s known as the Universal Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction does not differentiate between what is good and wise for you or what is not so good; it brings you what you focus on. If you are focusing on wanting a particular thing or on not wanting it, the emphasis is on what you are spending your time thinking about, so that’s what you are attracting into your day and your life. Unfortunately, many people think about what they don’t want, and as the Law of Attraction brings what we focus on, we are liable to get a fair share of those things we don’t want if we are not careful. As the Law of Attraction is always working, this includes what we think about and focus on in our working day. It’s by taking responsibility for your 1440 minutes each day that you become empowered and energised. Knowing how you would like your day to be is the way to get the best value out of it.

The importance of clear intention

What you think and intend is creating a forceful effect in the universal energy field. Intention is far more powerful than wishful thinking.

Setting your intention on a particular idea or aspect brings focus to it, and with it, a determination to achieve the desired result. Once you have clarity of direction and your desired outcome, and set your intention, half the work is already finished. Your intention is now starting to focus on your ideal working day.

In the course of the day, your brain will receive possibly millions of impressions. If you were consciously aware of all these impressions, you would be on information overload. Fortunately, your brain filters out the impression or information that is not considered to be important to you at the time. However, when you change your focus, your brain’s ‘filtering system’ changes. What you are now focusing on, which is a part of your intention, starts to appear in your life. You can then start taking advantage of opportunities that may already be there.

Have you ever ‘discovered’ something you thought was ‘new’ and just what you wanted at the time, and then found that it’s been around for years? Why hadn’t you noticed it previously? It’s because it was not a priority; it was not important to you then, so your brain had filtered out the information. It was only when the item became important or valuable to you that you became consciously aware of it.

Action puts into motion the energy behind the intention. When action aligns with your intention, the energy around you changes and brings you all kinds of people and events to support you.

 Focus on creating your own reality and your ideal working day.
    •    Be clear about your intention.
    •    Be consistent with your intention.
    •    Write your intention down.
    •    Show your commitment to your intention.
    •    Believe that you are creating your intention.

Love Lost

Love Lost

She becomes aware of a presence. Gently replacing the telephone handset she turns to see him standing in the doorway.

“Oh, you’re early. Its only 2pm” she says without looking at her watch.

He stands motionless.

Absent mindedly she slowly moves the white porcelain figurine on the oak cabinet as if to give the display of china a more orderly appearance. Then, moves it back to its original position.

Would you like a cup of tea?

“I’m leaving” he says.

Her eyes wander to his hand expecting to see the worn briefcase that had stood on the hall table every morning for the past twenty years. Instead, he's clutching the brown leather suitcase that reminisces of young lovers, exotic locations, dull meetings and dozens of identical airports. 

She stares at him.

“I’m in love with Margaret.”

She hears words but her mind struggles to make sense of them, frozen on “I’m in love.”

Then he is gone.

Drawing her awareness back from the empty doorway, she picks up the phone and dials. “Darling, I’m ready. I’ll ring a taxi now.”

She open the closet door and takes out her neatly packed suitcase.

Climbing into the waiting taxi her body starts to tremble. A solitary tear running down her right cheek is quick brushed away.  Her emotions dancing with sadness, with joy, and, longing.  She laughs out aloud as she gasps:  “Who would have believed it”

The driver watches through the rear view mirror. After years of driving through the streets of London he no longer cared or shared or talked. He just drove.

“Driver, airport please.”

Getting Started

Fortunately, positive changes can happen in a few minutes. Don’t wait for the perfect time or try to create the perfect move — you are not playing a game of chess, you are playing the game of life. Just start! The less resistance, the less waiting for the right moment, the easier it will be to find a solution or an alternative that works. I’m sure we have all said, ‘it’s just not a good time at the moment’. Well, what’s the definition of a good time or the right moment? There will always be challenges and opportunities that affect us individually and collectively. Regardless of what else is happening around you, you can engage your mind to accept the challenges and recognise the opportunities. You may only be looking at small enhancements or changes, but they make a significant difference to the energy level in your day.

 

However, simply recognising an opportunity is not enough — it is also about taking action and grounding the opportunity into the here and now.
